Management responsibilities for Wildwood’s animal collections and keeper teams
Responsible to:

This post is for a highly motivated person, with extensive management experience within a zoological / wildlife park setting. The individual will be proactive and forward thinking with a good understanding of collection operations. The post holder will have excellent leadership and management qualities to enthuse and develop our team of dedicated keepers. The post holder must demonstrate the qualities needed to ensure all the trust’s objectives are met: and assist in achieving all commercial, communications, conservation and operational objectives The role requires knowledge of enclosure design and maintenance with responsibility for ensuring we can display animals in natural woodland settings balancing efficient operations, visitor needs and animal welfare.


Duties will include:

1.1    Managing an animal collection
•    Population management knowledge and experience
•    Experience of engaging with zoo collection legislative processes
•    A good understanding of animal welfare issues
•    Experience of sourcing, and all that entails, of species to meet institutional objectives
•    Managing the collection to ensure animal welfare, visitor satisfaction, and commercial consideration are taken into account

1.2    Design and maintenance of enclosures
•    Knowledge and experience of enclosure design, construction and maintenance
•    Knowledge and experience of both animal welfare and zoo biology
•    An understanding and appreciation of working within logistical and resource limited environments.
•    An understanding of any planning requirements and follow-up processes ensuring efficiencies of use and ongoing maintenance.

1.3    Legislation and record keeping
•    A thorough understanding of ZIMS and stud-book management
•    Experience of engaging with zoo legislation, such as zoo inspection, EU zoo directive, animal licensing & BIAZA guidance
•    Engagement with veterinary and medical stock keeping and maintenance
•    Act as the firearms manager for the organisation
•    Responsible for animal emergency procedures and ensuring appropriate level of drills

1.4    Leadership & Administrative duties
•    Proven track record of leadership of animal keepers
•    Ensure effective quality control and continuous improvement in all aspects of the work and responsibilities attached to this post
•    Experience of maintaining and controlling stock and equipment.
•    Maintaining, with the finance department, departmental and project financial budgets
•    Good working experience / knowledge of Health and Safety maintenance / implementation would be highly desirable
•    Promote the development / CPD of our keeper teams
•    Knowledge or experience of HR procedures / duties would be advantageous
•    A proven ability to disseminate information in variable formats (written and presentation) and to a variety of audiences.

The above identified tasks are envisaged as core duties for the role, however, there will be wider tasks assigned to the incumbent as and when directed by the line manager and / or senior management team.
